Thank you for volunteering to judge! This page contains everything you need to know before judging at the Commonwealth Championship. If you have additional questions, please contact our Tournament Director by clicking HERE.
Prior to each round, we will hold a brief judge orientation meeting that will explain scoring and other procedural issues as well as answer any questions you may have. Refreshments will be served. Judges only need to attend the Judge Orientation before their first round, regardless of how many rounds they judge.
WHERE TO GO
PARKING - Weinstein Hall Parking Lot
Parking is available in the Weinstein Hall parking lot (see map below). Student representatives and signs will guide you to this location.
JUDGE ORIENTATION - Weinstein Hall - Brown Alley Room
When you arrive on campus, you will first attend a brief judge orientation meeting located in Weinstein Hall (near where you park) in the Brown Alley Room. Student representatives and signs will guide you to this location.
Trials take place in buildings surrounding the Jepson Quad (within easy walking distance of Weinstein Hall). Student representatives will walk you to those buildings and escort you back to Weinstein Hall following the round.
Competitors will be arguing a case prepared by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA). Judges need not be familiar with this case and are encouraged not to familiarize themselves with the case materials prior to the trial.
Competitors should have copies of pertinent documents to provide to the bench as necessary. AMTA's brief summary of the case is included below.
Midlands Television Studios v. Danny Kosack
On June 29, 2017, Defendant Danny Kosack was scheduled to appear on the highly-rated show Midlands After Dark with Alex Grace (produced by Plaintiff, Midlands Television Studios, Inc.) with Elias, Kosack's chimpanzee. But a rehearsal before the show went terribly wrong when Elias attacked the people in the room. Plaintiff's writer, Chris Villafana, was killed during the attack, and Plaintiff and Defendant have sued each other for negligence.
